Bachelor of Arts
Movement – language – music: eurythmy is an art of movement developed by Rudolf Steiner at the beginning of the 20th century. In eurythmy, the body becomes a conscious organ of perception and a moving multilayered instrument of expression. The laws and relationships between humans and the world are made visible.
The study of eurythmy trains the inherent potential of self-awareness and expression. The body becomes an instrument for spiritual and cognitive intentions. This process includes both intensive individual training and the training of group awareness in an ensemble. In cooperation with other university departments, a basic qualification in education and/or therapy is earned. Eurythmy opens up a wide range of career opportunities. The artist can develop his/her own style on stage as a performer or effectively apply the pedagogical and healing qualities of eurythmy in the fields of educational, cultural or therapeutic work.
Special Features of the Programme
The degree programme in eurythmy at Alanus University provides the opportunity to explore and reflect on the principles of human movement as well as a thorough training in the techniques of eurythmy.
Core studies include practical artistic ensemble and solo work as well as lectures and seminars. They are characterised by:
Intense ensemble work and diverse projects
Each academic year, an artistic programme with a special focus is developed and performed in various educational and cultural institutions. (1st year: eurythmy with objects, 2nd year: fairytale project, 3rd year: self-directed project, 4th year: Bachelor's thesis project and tour).
Comprehensive study with classical and contemporary music and/or poetry
Each year, a composition and/or poetry symposium takes place, which opens direct dialogue with contemporary composers and/or poets. The entire spectrum of musical works – from Beethoven to rap – is worked with the basis for performances.
Interdisciplinary exchange within the university
In interdisciplinary tandem teams, projects are developed jointly with students from other disciplines. Students from all departments also meet in the Studium Generale – a supplementary cultural studies programme of lectures and seminars.
Practical Phases
Internships in eurythmy education at schools and kindergartens, eurythmy therapy or youth projects are an integral component of the course and provide in-depth insight into potential professional fields.

Admission Requirements
- General or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (Abitur)
- Without a general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, admission is still possible if outstanding artistic talent is determined or if the applicant has completed vocational training with at least 3 years of professional experience
- Successful participation in the artistic audition
Admission Requirements for Internationals
Foreign applicants require proof of sufficient German or English language skills, both spoken and written. The language certificate can be submitted during the first year of study.

Application Process and Audition
Applications must be submitted in writing (not digitally). The application form and a list of the required documents are available under Downloads.
After reviewing the application documents, suitable candidates are invited for an audition, in which they perform a prepared presentation as well as a number of impromptu movement tasks. We are interested in your relationship to movement, music and literature as well as your motivation to study.

The Eurythmy programme can be funded through BAföG.
Funding for Students of Eurythmy
Alanus University grants interest-free loans to eurythmy students. Funding is available from the 2nd academic year in the Bachelor's programme and from the 1st academic year in the Master's programme (full-time only).
Scholarship in 1st Academic Year
Thanks to a private endowment, we offer two students in their 1st academic year (09/2018 to 08/2019) reduced tuition fees of 170 euros/month. The earmarked grant is aimed at people with a special aptitude for movement, language, or music or a special biographical background who apply between 20 August and 20 September 2018.
Deutschlandstipendium
Alanus University also awards “Germany Scholarships” in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Observation
Prospective students are welcome to join the programme for a day. Observation is an opportunity to gain insight into university life and courses as well as meet fellow students and lecturers.

Career Prospects
Eurythmy in Biography Work
Eurythmists guide and support children, youth, adults and seniors in their development, self-transformation and expansion of personal and social competencies. This work takes place in a variety of settings, such as kindergartens, youth centres, educational institutions, women's shelters, retirement homes, sports clubs, dance schools, clinics and prisons.
The effects of social-artistic eurythmy are an increase in happiness and energy as well as a very practical anthroposophy through movement – overall it has a positive impact on artistic-aesthetic education and social integration. Language development, sensory training, the improvement of fine and gross motor skills, preventive health care, as well as grief counselling and terminal care are additional areas of work.
Eurythmy in Culture and Society
Eurythmists are also active as performing artists both solo and in ensembles in public space and on stage. These events are held in cooperation with cultural and social services as well as a variety of sponsored institutions, or self-organised on stage, site specific or in natural settings.
Eurythmists also offer social-artistic courses and seminars as well as interdisciplinary projects with and without performances. Cultural pedagogical interventions, also with regard to intercultural exchange and contributions to overarching events, are further possibilities.
Eurythmy in the Professional World
In addition, eurythmists work together with employees from all departments and management levels in companies, commercial enterprises, public and private facilities and institutions. In a nutshell: anywhere that requires innovative ideas and creativity or an improvement in the working atmosphere. Important aspects include preventive health care, boosted energy, and the balancing of one-sided work processes. The focus is also on promoting personal development and expanding professional and personal qualifications.
Master’s Degree and Advanced Training
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor’s degree, further professional qualification is possible through a Master’s programme. The Master’s Programme in eurythmy is offered in three specialisations: Performative Eurythmy, Eurythmy in Schools and Society, and Eurythmy Therapy. All three courses lead to the internationally recognised academic title Master of Arts.
